Mikayla Keen To Help Other Riders Embrace Their Passion For Cycling

Mikayla Harvey is no stranger to Mike Greer Homes Womens Cycling Team. As a foundation rider in 2015 she has been involved with the team and its growth and development over the last 4 years. Over the last two years she has balanced racing for her UCI team – Team Illuminate while also giving back to her team that helped launch her career. Taking a big step in her professional career in 2019, Mikayla will be racing for Bigla Pro Cycling Team. The opportunity to keep a connection with Mikayla for our younger riders will be fantastic as she takes up this amazing opportunity in Europe, racing at the highest level and at some of the biggest races on the womens tour and in team with a huge reputation for developing riders.

Although she will no longer be riding for MGHWCT Mikayla is excited to help the next generation of riders, “Being asked to help mentor Mike Greer Homes Women’s Cycling is really exciting for me. MGH has been a huge part of my development over the past few years, and to be able to give back to the team and share my knowledge is an awesome opportunity. I am still reasonably fresh out of junior racing and only just jumping into my first professional season in Europe. My experience so far is relatively small, but I have so much to share in terms of embracing cycling as a lifestyle. As a road cyclist in New Zealand it can be very difficult to find your pathway. It can be very daunting entering the unknown and deciding to take a path different from most of your peers.” says Harvey.

Harvey is keen to show that by thinking big and backing your passion with dedication and commitment anything is possible, “I have so much passion and love for cycling and deciding to focus on my development over the past few years has been the best decision of my life. I strongly believe that you should follow your passion in life. What ever this is, you should embrace it and not be afraid of being or doing something different from everyone else. That’s what is so amazing about professional cycling. I can do what I love as a profession, and I couldn’t think of anything better.”

Mikayla goes on to say “Sharing this knowledge with MGHWCT is extremely important. I want to be able to motivate and inspire the team, by showing that it is possible to follow your dreams. The road is a bumpy one, but I believe that an environment filled with support and positivity is extremely important to help each other thrive. The opportunities that MGH have made available are huge. There is so much talent in New Zealand and I am so grateful to be part of this movement!”

Team manager Patrick Harvey’s excitement with riders like Mikayla giving back to the team is obvious. “We are so excited to see our vision of developing riders who go on to bigger and better things, but then because of the love of what they do and the environment we have created they want to give back to their team and country. That was our dream, our vision and it is coming to fruition. NZ cycling can only go from strength to strength as this feeds on itself!”

The team look forward to following Mikayla’s journey and the mentoring and inspiration she will bring to the team in 2019 and beyond.
