National Elite Road Race: Deb Paine

I knew leading into the race that it was going to be a toughie – a stacked field, challenging course and hot conditions. But I was determined to go out there, have fun and give it everything.

With only being two years deep in the sport, the tactical side of racing is still fairly new to me. But as the race unfolded I knew I was going to have to play it smart if I wanted to have any chance of a podium. My efforts to get away on any climb were quickly shut down so I decided I would have to take a different approach.

As the peloton didn’t seem interested in cooperating to close the gap on Georgia, I made a final ditch effort into the headwind prior to the climb on the last lap. Although I was still 12 seconds short of catching Georgia, I was successful in holding off the pelo and therefore 2nd overall.

Having a team mate on the top step and two more close behind in 4th and 5th, I am so excited to see what we can achieve as a unit in 2019.
