UCI Vr./belofte-Vr elite Crit – Connie Obrien

Yesterday the team took on the UCI Vr./belofte-Vr elite Crit in Eygelshoven. It was close to where we are based (sittard, Netherlands) which meant we could ride the race which has been a first (usually we travel at least 2 hours to each race).

This was a technical course made up of 49 laps of a 1.8km circuit consisting of a fast descent followed by a sharp corner into the climb with the finish line 300m from the top.

Unfortunately the team ended up in the same position as Friday where they call riders up to start line with Mike Greer Homes last. This made the beginning of the race hard as It was all go from the gun with 60 riders fighting for the front before the technical descent leading into the climb. It strung out straight away. Slowly but surly the team faught there way back to the front of the bunch.

With 10 laps in one rider went off the front. The bunch eased up and she got 1:30 minutes of it. Libby, Ashley Ankudinoff from Australia and myself worked hard to pull the rider in the unfortunately couldn’t catch her.

Every lap Ashley put the heat on up the hill making the group smaller each lap. With 20 laps to go ash attacked and broke away. Me and one other chased as a two up for the last 20 laps and we faught it out for 3rd.

Highlight of the race was a local standing in his driveway holding his garden sprinkling us to help stay cool in the heat!

Congrats to all the team mates who have all gone from strength to strength during this campaign
