Maia Barclay

My name is Maia and I’m 18 years old and live in Auckland. I started cycling when I was 11 years old after seeing my older brother start and thinking it looked like a cool sport to try. After doing my first race I was hooked and fell in love with cycling. For me, cycling provided the perfect outlet for me to challenge myself and see what I was capable of. I love the sense of freedom of riding outside in nature and the sense of achievement after putting in a hard effort. I have also found the cycling community and school teams I have been in to be such supportive atmospheres to learn and grow in as a cyclist and a person.

I am excited to be a part of the BMWC team because I think it is an amazing opportunity to be in a team where I can develop further as a rider while learning lots from a group of like-minded girls. With the team I will enjoy the opportunity to work together with the other riders to achieve as highly as we can. It is a dream come true to be able to ride in Europe with the team this year and gain many new experiences with this talented group of girls!

My major goal is to be able to ride for a Women’s World Tour team and be able to do races such as the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. I look up to a lot of kiwi female cyclists such as Mikayla Harvey, Georgia Williams and Niamh Fisher-Black because they have achieved this goal as kiwis and they have inspired me to get to the top level of cycling as well. A goal for me this year is also to have the opportunity to race at junior worlds.

Some of my best results have been 2rd in the Age group national champs road race this year, and 3rd in the same race last year.
