19 Feb 2024 Nationals: Kirsty Takes The Double
Nationals in Timaru this year was another big success for the BM crew.
BM riders were entered in all the women’s events and the crew had been working hard all summer to be in the best shape possible to give it their all, put down their best performance, aim for PB’s and chase National jersey’s.
We came away with titles or podiums in all grades in both the time trial and road race (we took credit for our ex BMers Kim and Mikayla in the elite women).
Hi-light of the week was the double national title for Kirsty who was on absolute fire destroying the field in the TT and then attacking the field and winning solo in the road race. This was one of the most dominating displays we have seen in the U19 women’s race in recent years. We are excited to see how Kirsty takes this form into Oceania’s, our European campaign and hopefully Worlds. Ava also showed her strength in the u19 races, taking 3rd in a tough fought battle between 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the TT and wasn’t happy to settle for a podium in the road race fighting till the very end to chase Kirsty keeping the gap between 30 – 15 seconds for most of the race. Unfortunately for Ava she narrowly missed a podium paying the tactical price on the sprint for 2nd and 3rd.
We were delighted to have both Charlotte and Maia on the podium for the U23 TT in a quality field.
Watching ex BM riders Kim and Mikayla who are now riding World Tour going 1-2 in the Elite TT was super inspiring for our young riders, having these two warming up beside our riders and sharing words of advice was invaluable.
Both Kim and Mikayla would then go on to light up the women’s road race showing their aggressive and exciting racing style. With the elites lighting up the race 2 laps in our young riders were really dumped into the ‘fire’ but they responded with tenacity and determination, Muireann showing the fight she has learned from racing overseas for the past two years to move through the field, tough it out and secure a well deserved podium spot in the U23 race. To have all our riders but Charlotte who had to withdraw due to sickness finish is testament to the positive attitude shown by our riders and embodied by the team culture.
As always thanks to all our supporters and helpers over the weekend, the parents of our younger riders for the endless support and our fantastic sponsors who make this pathway possible.
Congrats to all our riders for the awesome attitude during the weekend and a big shoutout to our champion and podium riders below:
U19 Time Trial: Kirsty 1st, Ava 3rd
U19 Road Race: Kirsty 1st, Ava 4th
U23 Time Trial: Charlotte 2nd, Maia 3rd

Keep an eye out for posts from our riders on their Nationals experience coming soon.
