2025 Elite / U23 NZ National Road Race

🌟 Race Recap: Elite / U23 Women’s Road Race Road Nationals 🌟

Despite gloomy weather, our spirits were high as we anticipated a thrilling race filled with talent, including all but one of the NZ world tour riders. With one key climb on the course, we expected some serious action on the five ascents.

Our strategy was clear—get riders in the lead split early, look for attacking opportunities, take a chance on the final climb for an elite podium with Charlotte, and aim for the U23 podium by racing smart with our 3 strong contendors.

Alea led the charge early, creating space and positioning herself well. However, the initial climb didn’t spark the expected attacks, and the pack remained relatively calm.

The second climb saw some splits, with EF rider Kim Cadzow initially missing out but quickly rallying the chasers including some of her ex BM team mates 🙂

By the third climb, Charlotte was well-positioned and conserving energy

A mishap in the feed zone caused Alex and Ava to go down. Ava managed to rejoin the race with Georgia’s help, but Alex faced a tougher day stuck in the 11.

On the penultimate climb, Charlotte made it into the lead group even after some unanticipated gravel time 🙂

The front group saw some tactical manoeuvres, with Kim showcasing her race smarts taking her opportunity to go clear soon after the climb.

As the gap grew, the main contenders were busy with their own battles, allowing Kim to capitalize on her advantage.

Charlotte finished an impressive 6th, and Ava secured an awesome 3rd in the U23 race behind ex BMers Rhylee and Kirsty.

Massive kudos to our ex BMers Kim for her victory, and Niamh for her powerhouse performance on the final climb – that was impressive – like a cannon 🚴‍♀️✨

Charlotte Clarke 6th, Ava Maddison 3rd U23, Georgia Waghorn 4th U23, Micheala Rogan 14th, Alex Rawlinson 5th U23, Alia Wentz 19th
