Motatapu Mountain Bike: Summer and Piper Karras

Motutapu 2025

It was our first year doing the Motutapu MTB race. Piper and I had the opportunity to take on the challenge with 47km of rugged terrain, 1000 m of elevation, and multiple river crossings, we both knew it wasn’t going to be easy as we’d never done anything like it. Both of our goals were to simply finish the race and avoid any major mishaps. we were both just excited to see what this event was all about and get involved with something a bit different than the usual for us.

We both came into this race with little to no training on our MTB as it wasn’t a focus for us, but to just have some fun. The race started off with some tough little climbs, which made it hard from the start, then came the river crossings and the main descent, which tested our MTB bike handling skills with the rocky and uneven surfaces.

47km later we both made it to the finish line pretty happy with our efforts, Piper finishing 1st out of 12 riders in U19 women and me in 2nd place, both in top 15 overall women out of 171 riders.
