Pro Corner: Mikayla – Development Is Crucial

A New Zealand team competing overseas is an incredible opportunity for aspiring female cyclists. Chasing the dream of being a professional cyclist is difficult coming from New Zealand when the heart of cycling Europe. Personally, I have been through the roller coaster journey of leaving home and embracing this dream. However, it has been a challenging journey and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of many people close to me. This is why I believe a New Zealand team that races in Europe is an essential pathway for developing riders from New Zealand. There is no clear pathway for riders to develop from the grass root level to becoming professional. I have often been asked how I managed to get to where I am now. I can not give a clear answer, apart from the fact that racing and overcoming adversity is key. This is why having a NZ team racing in Europe will be critical for rider development. Aspiring athletes can have the opportunity to compete in a variety of races whilst also being exposed to a new environment. Racing overseas can be daunting and unpredictable but by having a structured team environment I believe young athletes will be able to cope better and lead to an improvement in performance . Leading to more talented riders getting picked up by bigger / world tour teams.
