National Elites: Libby Arbuckle

The weekend of NZ Road Nationals started off with a 20km Individual Time Trial, the main focus for me. Being the first age group racing on the course definitely had its perks with light winds and cooler temperatures. My ride didn’t quite go as planned but it was awesome to hold onto bronze for a second year and to see Mike Greer Homes riders go 1, 2, 3.

This year was my first time racing the road race. Knowing the course didn’t suit me I planned to get in the early break to help my team mates and hopefully get a head start on the city loop. After a few failed attempts I managed to break away. Unfortunately, no one came with me so instead of got into Time Trial mode and pushed on by myself.

It wasn’t until the end of the rural loop that I was caught by another rider but after being solo for so long and not drinking/eating as much as I should’ve I couldn’t quite hang on. When Georgia bridged up to me I tried my best to help as much as I could riding back to the city in the cross winds.

I was very happy with how I raced and was surprised when I found out that I had hung onto the QOM jersey. (Can’t say I’ve worn one of those in a while).

Overall, it was amazing start to the season for our team. Huge thank you to Patrick and Tammy for all their help.
