I was excited to race the Grape Ride as the course goes around one of my favourite training loops that I do. Knowing the course is definitley an advantage also, in any race we compete in.
Normally the women’s race would start just before the fun ride and we’d end up getting mixed in with them, making for a much faster pace to Picton. However this year we started 15mins before the Elite Men so we’d have more of our own race, which made for a much harder race as we’d all have to do a fair bit of work each.
Despite a small women’s field, it was nice having everyone work together until Picton, feeling like we were one big team at that point. Once we got to Picton I knew I had to make the hills as hard as possible as there is a lot of flat coming back to the finish from Havelock. I found myself with one other rider, Annamaire Lipp after the main 2km climb and we worked really well together from there.
The finish is pretty technical and dangerous so I really wanted to try go solo before the finish. With about 10km I caught her off guard and got a little gap on her, so I went for it and the rest was history. It was nice to take my first win in the Jersey, especially in my home town too!
